I’ve been dreaming of Paris since I was a little girl. I loved reading the Madeline books filled with images of the Eiffel Tower, elegant buildings with black iron balconies, and historic bridges floating over the Seine river. Then again in French classes in both middle and high school… and into my adult life as I continued learning the language, watching French movies and appreciating the culinary masterpiece that is French cuisine with a new, adult palate. I never traveled much as a child, and didn’t have the money to go anywhere while I was in college! But I was always hoping that I would marry someone someday who desired to see the world as much as I did.
We set up this photo shoot towards the end of our 8 days in Paris, so by that point we had felt the magic and romance of the city. We started at sunrise, around 7:30 am, before the Parisians were out and about. It was absolutely breathtaking to see the city in early morning light with no crowds. One of my favorite parts of our shoot was just enjoying the views around us, and being with Michael in such a beautiful place.
We started at Trocadero, which is on a hill overlooking the most glorious view of the Eiffel Tower. Then we headed to the Louvre for it’s towering columns, arches and incredible architecture. After that, we walked to Place Dauphine which is a small park on the Île de la Cité. The cobblestone streets had no cars and lots of perfectly Parisian cafes to walk and dance around. We finished the session by walking along the Seine, one of our favorite things to do.
Now to share a very humbling part of our trip – I had been violently ill for 3 whole days that week. (But I think I look skinny in these pictures, so now I joke that I was on this great diet called the stomach virus…) I got some kind of horrible stomach bug that made me sick, not able to eat for 3 days, incredibly weak and tired. I spent those days laying in bed in our hotel room, just feeling absolutely miserable and deeply sad that I was missing so many days in Paris, a city I’d dreamed of visiting my whole life. Michael was also sick a few days before me, so we lost almost 4 out of our 8 days in Paris. But the most incredible part was the way that Michael selflessly served me while I was sick. He doesn’t speak French, but managed 2 grocery store trips and 1 laundromat trip on his own to buy and do things I needed. He never once made a smart comment about being stuck in the hotel. He never left my side and took care of me with such joy in his heart. I will never, ever forget those 3 days. I don’t know if I could have treated him with as much love and care as he did for me. I probably would have been steeped in disappointment. But his selfless heart teaches me things daily.
When I look through these photos, I realize how many dreams came true. I married not only someone who loves to travel, but the most kind, selfless, loving, smart, hard working man I have ever met. Michael listens to me talk about my dreams, cares about the desires of my heart and helps me make them come true. I think about how he took care of me when I was sick and instead of being disappointed, I feel so deeply loved and cared for. Plus I finally got to see the Eiffel Tower! And it’s so much more grand and beautiful than I imagined. So for us, these photos represent a pretty fantastic time in our life. We are doing what we love for a living, seeing the world together, and making dreams come true.
