When I look at these pictures from 2016, I can’t help but get a little teary eyed. What a wonderful year! Michael and I have photographed the sweetest moments all over the East Coast and Paris, France! We spent a ton of hours on the beaches here in Delaware, running on the sand and playing in the waves with our clients. We have laughed, danced, gotten our feet wet in the ocean and jumped in a pool for our first ever underwater engagement session.
I am eternally grateful that I get to work with Michael. This whole husband and wife team thing is pretty amazing. We have grown so much this year in about a million different ways. We are always learning, trying to change and make things better for us, our business and our clients. Our photography has improved as we’ve experienced a new level of confidence and joy in our work. Our biggest goal this year was to make pictures, not just take pictures… to capture things in a unique and beautiful way. I have seen that vision play out all year long and it’s the most creatively fulfilling thing.
Some 2016 highlights:
-In February, we spent 3 freezing cold days with 10 other photographers from all over the country at a workshop led by a husband and wife team we admire, The Hoffers. The “hoffshop” was one of the best things we’ve done for our business. It was our first time ever being professionally critiqued and was definitely the biggest kick in the butt of our career.
-In March, we celebrated Michael quitting his 9 to 5 job of eight years to go full time with our business! That has been the biggest and best change of our lives. Working together full time every single day is truly a joy!
-We spent the whole month of April in Europe, just for fun. Neither of us had ever been to Europe and there were so many places we wanted to go. We started in Scotland (which was our favorite!), then England, France and Germany!
-Every spring, we look forward to the Connect Retreat in Georgia. It’s a conference for married couples who own businesses together. It’s such a wonderful time for us to connect with each other and other couples who are similar to us. This year, we met a couple that we’ve grown to be close friends with. Kathryn and Devin are a husband and wife photography team in Charlotte, North Carolina. They came to Delaware to visit us in July and we’re seeing them again in Hawaii soon!
-Over 50 families trusted us to capture their beach vacation memories this summer!
-We flew to California to be guests at a close friend’s wedding and ended up photographing the whole thing when their photographer didn’t work out. It was so much fun and we’re really glad we brought some of our gear! We also took a road trip through the desert together to visit Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon during that trip. Seeing the sun rise over the canyon was something we will never forget.
-A few awesome couples hired us to capture their surprise proposals on the beach. That’s always such a thrilling moment for us! One proposal was just after sunrise in Bethany Beach and by the end of the session, everyone was swimming in the ocean!
-In November, we were flown to Paris, France to capture a surprise proposal and engagement session for the sweetest couple. I am still pinching myself over that whole trip! It was our second time to Paris this year (like what?!) and we got to shoot at the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. It was such a dream and an experience we will never forget!
-Michael and I started leading our local chapter of The Rising Tide Society, a group of creative entrepreneurs. The Southern Delaware “Tuesdays Together” group is a fun mix of creatives – photographers, calligraphers, woodworkers, cafe owners and graphic designers. We meet monthly at our favorite local cafe, Amity Coffee, in our hometown and discuss different topics like marketing, finance, etc. This group has been such an answer to prayer! We finally feel like we have a group of young, creative people who work for themselves, just like us. The community is such a sweet gift that we are so thankful for.
-In December during the beginning of our off-season, we participated in our first ever styled shoot. We worked with a gorgeous venue and basically put on two “mock weddings” with two different looks themed Water and Earth. The team of vendors was the best in the business and the whole styled shoot day was so fun and inspiring. We can’t wait to share those images in January!
